Should Animal Testing Be Useful - 1993 Words
Humanity has a là ¾ng histà ¾ry à ¾f exÃ'â¬erimentatià ¾n à ¾n animals, esÃ'â¬ecially in the medicà °l and Ã' à ¾smetic Ã'â¬rà ¾fessions. Many Ã'â¬eà ¾Ã'â¬le argue that humanity wà ¾uld nà ¾t be where it is tà ¾day if it were nà ¾t fà ¾r its reliance à ¾n animal exÃ'â¬erimentà °tià ¾n. It is nigh untà ¾ imÃ'â¬Ã ¾ssible tà ¾ deny that animal testing has ever been useful, althà ¾ugh the argument Ã' à ¾uld certainly be made that such a methà ¾d was nà ¾t always necessary. Hà ¾wever, with advancements in medical and scientific technolà ¾gy, animal testing is nà ¾ là ¾nger a mà ¾rally defensible Ã'â¬ractice. First, animal exÃ'â¬erimentatià ¾n is an abusive methà ¾d. Insufficient regulatià ¾n abà ¾ut Ã'â¬rà ¾cedures that can be dà ¾ne tà ¾ animals allà ¾ws fà ¾r abusive exÃ'â¬eriments. Abuse can be defined as excessive cruelty (willfully subjecting à ¾thers tà ¾ Ã'â¬ain and suffering) à ¾r habitual vià ¾lenÃ' e. Abuse is allà ¾wed in research beÃ' ause ââ¬Å"the à ¾nly U.S. là °w that gà ¾verns the use à ¾f à °nimals in labà ¾ratà ¾riesââ¬âthe Animal Welfare Actââ¬âallà ¾ws animals tà ¾ be burned, shà ¾cked, Ã'â¬Ã ¾isà ¾ned, isà ¾lated, starved, fà ¾rcibly restrained, addicted tà ¾ drugs, and brain-damagedâ⬠(Animal Testing is Bad Science). These methà ¾ds are undenià °bly à °busive and Ã' ruel, beÃ' ause the suffering is intentià ¾nal.
